What is Guided Biofilm Therapy?

Gone are the days of the traditional 'scrape and polish'. Step into a new era of dental hygiene with Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), a revolutionary approach that prioritises comfort and effectiveness. GBT is a state-of-the-art method designed to ensure the most effective removal of plaque and biofilm (a sticky layer of bacteria that forms on your teeth and gums), often leading to dental issues such as gum inflammation, gum disease, and cavities.

GBT not only ensures thorough cleaning but also addresses patient concerns such as sensitivity to cold water and anxiety. By embracing this advanced technique, patients experience a gentler, more reassuring dental visit, setting a new standard in oral care.

Guided Biofilm Therapy is an innovative and thorough cleaning process that prioritises your comfort and oral health. Using advanced Airflow® technology, GBT combines the power of air, water, and a special powder to remove biofilm, plaque, bacteria, and stains in a minimally invasive way.

The GBT Process

  • Assessment and Disclosure: After an assessment of your oral health and gums, a special dye will be used to highlight the biofilm. This ensures that no areas are missed during cleaning and enables patients to see what areas they must improve on.
  • Airflow®: A controlled jet of air, water, and erythritol powder (a natural sweetener) is used to gently and effectively clean your teeth, gums, and soft tissues. This step removes the biofilm, plaque, and staining.
  • Scaling: A Piezon® scaler is used to remove any remaining tartar/calculus.
  • Oral Hygiene instruction: Your Therapist will then go through interdental cleaning aids and brushing technique with you to ensure long-term prevention at home.

Benefits of Guided Biofilm Therapy

  • Enhanced Comfort: The non-invasive and non-abrasive technology ensures a pain-free and pleasant experience.
  • Reduced Sensitivity: The EMS machine can heat the water to around 40 degrees, reducing sensitivity, making the procedure more comfortable.
  • Superior Cleaning: GBT effectively targets and removes biofilm and stains, ensuring a deeper, more thorough clean compared to traditional methods.
  • Preventive Care: By thoroughly removing biofilm, GBT helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues.
